The British Museum‘s Great Court was originally an open garden that was lost to the public with the construction of the Round Reading Room of the British Library. Over the years a critical level of congestion built up throughout the building, and consequently the departure of the British Library to St Pancras in north London in 1998 created a welcome opportunity to recapture the lost space. The Reading Room has been retained as a public information centre and library, but the clutter of bookstacks has been removed. Covering an area of 6,100 square metres (65,600 square feet), the Great Court is the largest enclosed public space in Europe. The glazed roof-canopy‘s unique triangulated geometry is designed to span the irregular gap between the Reading Room dome and the restored nineteenth-century facades. The lattice steel shell forms both the primary structure and framing for the glass, which is designed to reduce solar heat gain. The Court is entered from the Museum‘s principal level, through a great Ionic portico. Here there are information points, a bookshop and cafe. Two broad staircases encircle the drum of the Reading Room, leading to the upper-level galleries and two mezzanine levels which provide a restaurant and a gallery for temporary exhibitions. Beneath the floor of the Court are galleries for the African Collection of Ethnography, an education centre with two auditoriums, and facilities for schoolchildren.
