This complex and controversial project offers a dark insight into the history of apartheid. Improbably situated southwest of Johannesburg in an area reserved for casinos and theme parks, the museum is a largely single-storey structure. Rock-filled gabion baskets in rusting steel frames and large planted earth mounds in the landscape around the building refer to the material qualities of the nearby gold mines and dumps. The main building is a linear sequence of exhibition spaces exploring ideas of restriction and constraint, attraction and repulsion, and the complexities of individual identity and place within the visual narrative and history of apartheid. The journey begins externally, leading from the ground up to the roof via a large walled ramp that narrows at the end to frame views of Johannesburg. Seven large concrete columns representing the seven pillars of the constitution mark the entrance and echo the city‘s skyline beyond. A large spiral staircase then descends into the raw concrete belly of the main exhibition space, which is dimly lit by small windows and overhead concrete shafts. Light is kept to a minimum in this audio-visual environment to augment feelings of enclosure and restriction. More light is gradually admitted as the sequence of the narrative unfolds, until the visitor arrives in the Constitution space, a large concrete cube that triumphantly opens up to the elements to celebrate freedom and change.
